The Pharaohs
The Pharaohs are the spectacle profile: sacred image, monument, labor, centralized command, and the warning of bondage.
The instrument of power.
Pharaoh represents power that makes itself cosmic. Monument, ritual, bureaucracy, army, and labor all point upward toward a ruler presented as more than political.
The Machiavellian lesson is symbolic control. If people experience the ruler as the center of reality, obedience becomes easier to organize.
The warning.
Order can become slavery. The Pharaohs belong here because Torah remembers that empire can look magnificent while crushing the human being beneath it.
