Richelieu is the reason-of-state profile: disciplining nobles, balancing enemies, and subordinating sentiment to state interest.

Richelieu treated politics as architecture. Internal rivals, noble privilege, foreign threats, and religious alliances were all measured against the durability of the state.
The Machiavellian lesson is that policy may require cold alignment rather than emotional friendship. Stability is built by arranging pressures, not merely by wishing for harmony.
The warning.
State interest can become an idol. Richelieu belongs here because prudence is necessary, but the state must not replace the moral horizon.
